I’m overweight because I eat a lot, so common sense dictates that I reduce what I eat. Yes, but not by skipping whole meals and especially not breakfast. So for those who think they are killing two birds with one stone; saving time by getting out of the house earlier and cutting down weight by passing on the first meal of the day, think again.
Why does missing breakfast prevent you from losing weight?
It’s not by mistake that breakfast is referred to as the most important meal of the day. If you skip breakfast, you are more likely to gain weight rather than lose it. While this sounds ironic, it’s the truth.
Most people who don’t take breakfast have been observed to indulge in calorie-laden junk foods in the course of the day. The excess calories are converted into fat and stored in the body. Those who chuck down a well-balanced meal at the start of the day, on the other hand, are more likely to keep choosing the right type of foods for the rest of the day.
What is a good breakfast?
And by breakfast we don’t mean the banana or cup of coffee you grab as you dash to work. We mean a balanced, nutritious meal that provides the body with the energy it needs to function optimally throughout the day. You also want to steer clear of foods that are high in sugar and saturated fat. Lay off the fried bacon and the sweet, chocolate-coated cereals. Don’t deceive yourself into thinking the sugar-rush is what you need to get up and about; you probably won’t burn all those calories.
So what should the ideal breakfast look like?
It should contain a good source of protein, preferably one that has as little fat as possible. Eggs are a good option in this regard, though you don’t want to overdo them as the yolk contains a lot of cholesterol. Milk is also good, but try and make do with the low-fat variety or soy milk (it’s an acquired taste, but definitely worth the trouble).
When it comes to carbs, go for whole-grain bread instead of sugary pastries. It’s better for your digestion and leaves you feeling fuller for longer. Top your breakfast off with an apple, orange or slice of papaya. Not only are these a healthy source of glucose, they also digest slowly, meaning your hunger pangs will only return when it’s properly lunch time.
Take time to enjoy your breakfast
Just as you take time to plan other aspects of your life, you should also make provisions for a proper breakfast, in view of the weight loss benefits it can bring. To avoid rushing the meal, why not plan to have it as early as possible after you get out of bed? Or better yet, why not leave a 30-minute slot in your day to give yourself adequate time to prepare a wholesome breakfast and sit down to enjoy it?
If even this half an hour will be too costly, why not split the meal into two? Eat the lighter portion of it before you leave the house and then pack the rest away and eat it when you get to work.
