It has to be said: There’s simply no single magic pill, miracle food, or all-in-one solution to losing weight. People from all walks of life can strive to slim down for a number of reasons — a young woman may be attending a wedding in a few months, or a mother may be planning to shape up to participate in a 5K race, or a man could have experienced health issues that can be greatly improved by healthier eating habits.
Whatever the purpose for losing weight may be, each of these individuals must accept that they would need to work toward the goal of losing weight, and that requires a significant amount of discipline and the right motivation.
Of course, the journey to achieving a healthier weight doesn’t have to appear so daunting. The key is to be mindful of several little steps that you can take that, when combined, all contribute to your health goals.
If, for example, you’ve made the decision to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle by going vegan, weight loss can be achieved by making a conscious effort to overhaul your eating habits, fitness routines, and outlook in life and the environment.
Here are some important things that you can do to begin reaching your weight loss goals:
- Identify your purpose as well as a workable target to aim for. You need a specific goal to help you stay on track as you progress. Whether doctors’ orders require you to slim down to half your current weight to avoid a looming diabetes risk, or you want to lose 30 pounds so you can keep up with your young and active kids, write it down — and look at what you’ve written every time you hit an obstacle. This will give you a helpful push in the right direction when you find yourself faltering.
- Revamp your food choices and eating habits, and be diligent about planning your meals. Food will be a major factor that will affect the results you get, so this is an area you should really put work into. Following a vegan diet means crossing off all animal products and by-products from your grocery list; get help from fellow vegans and online resources about places to find healthful ingredients and recipes for dairy or meat substitutes. You won’t always find vegan-friendly offerings in stores and restaurants, so be prepared to study how to cook delicious meals — and it’s smart to prepare them in advance so that you’ll know what you’re meant to eat for each meal and you won’t be tempted to snack on something unhealthy. Of course, going vegan doesn’t mean you’ll no longer indulge in a few sweet treats every now and then. You’ll find plenty of recipes for delicious treats like vegan carrot cake (which you can make and share during family gatherings) and vegan French toast (for a lovely, healthy weekend breakfast) made from wholesome ingredients like almond or coconut flour, almond milk, applesauce, agave, and rich, raw vegan cream cheese made from cashews.
- Devise a workout routine. Becoming more active is an effective way to start losing the pounds. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or ride a bike to the store or the office, do house chores, go to the gym, run, sign up for a yoga class. When exercise becomes a habit, you’ll find that your body is stronger and that you can do things you couldn’t before.
- Establish a support system. Your weight loss journey doesn’t have to be a solitary one; it’s great to let family and friends know about your goals so they can encourage you and help keep you motivated.
