Diet related diseases such as obesity, type two diabetes, and heart disease are some of the most costly illnesses out there. Individuals who are diagnosed with diet-related illnesses spend more money on healthcare and health insurance than almost any other classification of illness. Furthermore, these health threats are completely avoidable.

While there can be some genetic factors that come into play, for the most part illnesses like obesity and type two diabetes boil down to an unhealthy lifestyle. This unhealthy lifestyle when taken to the extreme can become a huge problem for an individual’s overall well-being and longevity—and can be a financial expense more stressful than any other. Use these basic guidelines to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid a health insurance nightmare.

A Healthy Diet

An unhealthy diet is one of the primary causes of obesity and many other diseases. Our society today values speed and ease. While this can be a wonderful approach for some things in our lives, it is typically not the best when it comes to our diets and what we consume on a regular basis. Diet-related illnesses occur when we consume more calories than we burn off. Diets high in sugar and highly processed foods are unhealthy and problematic for one’s health.

Make an effort to consume things that are good for you. Eating out regularly and getting fast food typically results in eating fatty, unhealthy meals and portions that are too large. Weight Bearing Exercise and Cardio

Equally as important as our diet is the amount of physical activity we perform. Of course, we’ve heard it time and time again—exercise is essential. Yes, most of us know this. But, when it comes to cutting back medical issues and, in turn, medical costs, there are few things more effective than regular exercise. Along with a healthy diet, getting regular excise and movement into your daily routine is essential.

Not only does regular exercise reduce your likelihood of developing health issues like obesity and heart disease, it can also improve your immune system and keep you away from the doctor more often. Try to vary the types of workouts that you do. Combine routines of both cardiovascular exercise and muscular exercises. Things like running, walking, swimming, and cycling are wonderful ways to get in regular cardio.

On top of those, consider things like weight lifting, yoga, and lap swimming. These weight bearing exercises help strength muscle and bone, reducing risk of many other harmful and damaging illnesses and injuries. Of course, as with anything, you should carefully educate yourself on what types of exercises and workouts would be best for you.

Rest and Mental Wellness

Something that many people fail to consider when discussing overall health and wellness is rest and psychological factors. Doctors and researchers have made several links between poor sleep habits and diseases like obesity and heart disease. Rest is one of the most important activities your body can perform. Pay attention to how much rest your body and mind get each night and be sure that you are getting enough.

Diet and exercise can play a huge role in how much sleep you get as well. So, if you improve your diet and exercise plans, you may find rest more welcoming. Stress also makes a large impact on your overall health and well-being. Be sure that you consider your mental wellness when you are examining your physical wellness as well. Things like depression and other psychological disorders can make an impact on physical ailments and diseases.
