Hike Your Way to Thin, Lean & Fit

written by Guest Blogger June 28, 2012

I’ve always thought of myself as the “outdoorsy” type, not only because I look good in a pair of hiking boots but because I feel so at home and at peace in nature. Today our guest blogger, Nick, reminds us of some of the health benefits of hiking!

When you hear the phrase “weight loss”, the first things that would come to your mind would probably include eating low-carb, low-fat, low-everything foods, and undergoing rigorous workout sessions with trainers in high-priced gyms. You will probably even have to sign up for a gym membership.

Just the thought of spending all that money is enough to discourage one from trying to lose weight.

Hiking Helps – A Lot

It is an accepted principle that walking is one of the most effective ways to lose weight. Others take it a notch higher and run regularly in the hopes that the more physical activity they exert, the more calories will be burned and the faster the rate of their weight loss will be.

However, not a lot of people are aware of achieving weight loss through hiking. They view it more as a sport or a hobby and less as an activity that can be likened to exercise or a workout.

Why Hiking Is Good For You

Here are key things about hiking that should teach you to never underestimate hiking and its benefits when it comes to weight management.

  • It’s an Everyone Activity: Just like walking, virtually anybody and everybody can hike. If you deem you are too old or too young, you can choose freely the trail that you will take when hiking. You can start kids young and teach them how to appreciate hiking so they will keep doing it when they grow older. For adults, it is never too late to start hiking.
  • It Burns More Calories Than Walking: One hour of brisk walking can burn as much as 224 calories. Hiking, on the other hand, can burn 354 calories in the same length of time. If you also happen to be carrying a backpack, expect the calories burned to reach as high as 413 calories in an hour.
  • It is An Overall Workout: Burning calories and fats and zapping all that excess weight is not the only benefit of hiking. Climbing and wrestling with complicated trails and uneven terrain will put all muscle groups of your body to work. Your cardiovascular system will also get a workout, while the use of walking poles and carrying a backpack will build up your upper body strength. All in all, hiking will increase your body’s strength and endurance.
  • It Won’t Cost You A Fortune: You don’t have to join a gym or hire a trainer in order to go hiking. Go with a group of friends or go at it alone. You’ll probably only have to invest in very good hiking boots and the suitable clothes as well as a backpack and other hiking gear.
  • There Are No Rules: There will be no rigid or strict workout guidelines that you have to follow because you can do it at your own pace. Naturally you will have to consider some safety measures and some regulations for hikers, but nothing that would restrict you from enjoying the experience while working all that excess weight away.

No Pain, No Gain

They say you have to endure some pain in order to get the results you want. Weight loss by hiking can also be associated with the phrase “no pain, no gain”, but in a different way.

Pain could never be a word you would relate to all that activity and experience with the wonders and beauty of nature you will get through hiking. It is definitely a painless experience where not only you won’t gain any weight but actually you will lose, and keep it from coming back.
