One of the most over-looked aspects of our health are our eye care. Keep reading today’s article by guest blogger, Tara Heath, to find out what we can be doing to take better care of our eyes.

Your sight is one of your most valuable senses. From reading to driving, and everything in between, you use your vision on a constant basis, which is why it is so important to maintain healthy eyes.

However, with excessive use of electronics, eye health is becoming a major problem for a lot of people. Constant staring at computer, cell phone and tablet screens can cause eye strain, which can lead to double-vision, eye fatigue and headaches, and can speed up the development of age-related eye health issues.

For this reason, it is exceptionally important to take proper care of your eyes and make efforts to ensure your eyes remain healthy. Here are five effective and simple ways that you can keep the future of your eye health bright.

You probably remember your mother telling you how important eating fruits and veggies are for your health, and she was absolutely right!

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with nutrients that are vital for your overall health, as well as the health of your eyes. Foods that are high in vitamins A, C and E are especially important for your vision. Carrots, oranges and broccoli, for example, are excellent foods for your eyes.

2. Practice the 20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule was developed to reduce the development of eye strain, which often occurs as a result of excessive technology use. While using your computer, smartphone or tablet, look at something that is 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Doing so will allow you to relax yours eyes and avoid straining them.

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep is so important for the health of your eyes. Ever notice how puffy, sleepy and drained your eyes feel when you haven’t gotten enough sleep?

If possible, get 8 hours of sleep every night. Also, make sure that you are sleeping in optimal conditions to get a really rejuvenating rest. For instance, turn off the television, make sure the room is dark and cool, and that you are sleeping on a surface that provides proper support.

4. Do Eye Exercises

Exercise for your eyes? Yes! There are several exercises that you can practice that will improve the health of your eyes, including:

  • Eye rolling. Look up and slowly circle your eyes 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise
  • Focus. Hold a pencil, pen or another object an arm’s length away. Focus your eyes on the object, slowly bring the pen closer to your face until it is about 6 inches from your nose, and then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the object. Repeat this exercise 10 times.
  • Close your eyes. Lean your head back, close your eyes and relax for a few minutes, not focusing on anything.

Do these exercises as soon as you wake up, in the middle of the day, and before you go to bed to achieve optimal results.

5. Have Regular Eye Exams

Having a professional eye exam is such an important key for maintaining good vision. This is particularly true if you wear corrective lenses, but it also applies if you don’t wear contact lenses or glasses. During an eye exam, your doctor will assess the health of your eyes, determining if any issues are developing. If a condition is noted, you can receive proper treatment to correct or improve it.

By following these five tips, you can ensure your vision will stay in tip-top condition for a long, long time.
