Detox Drink Recipes

by Head Health Nutter on March 10, 2008

Spring is right around the corner and it’s time for a new beginning. Yes, I know fellow Ontarions, Nature dumped on us this weekend (30 cm or 1 foot of snow here in Toronto). But really, I promise Spring is coming. And it’s the perfect time to clean out your closets AND your body with some detoxing and cleansing.

fruit-and-veggie-drinks.jpg

If you’re experiencing signs of toxicity and want to start feeling better now, as well as ensure a longer, happier life, then start by helping your body detoxify. You might be surprised to hear that one of the easiest and healthiest ways to do this is simply through food!

Nature has given us plenty of food which helps our detoxification processes (more commonly known as super foods with anti-oxidant powers). Just to name a few (source: Life Peak magazine, Vol. 2, Issue 4):

  • Lemons
  • Prunes
  • Leafy greens
  • Naturally fermented sauerkraut (pickled with good bacteria, not vinegar)
  • Papaya

The following are a few juice recipes that I used to lose 25 lbs in 3 months during a month long cleanse last year. They are to be juiced but a really good juicer costs mucho moula – and unfortunately, my other expenses take priority right now. So instead, I used my trusty blender. However, the consistency is hard to swallow – think really chunky baby food. So if you can afford it, use a juicer:

Potassium Juice

3 carrots
3 stalks celery
½ bunch spinach
½ bunch parsley

Ginger Root Boost

1 inch slice ginger root
Juice from 1 fresh lemon
6 carrots with tops
1 seeded apple

High Blood Pressure Reducer

2 garlic cloves
1 handful parsley
1 cucumber
4 carrots with tops
2 stalks celery

Yummy Green Drink

½ bunch spinach
2 big kale leaves
¼ cup OJ
1 small banana
1 kiwi

Homemade V8 (6 glasses)

6-8 tomatoes
3-4 green onions with tops
½ green pepper
2 carrots
2 stalks celery with tops
½ bunch spinach
½ bunch parsley
2 lemons (just the juice)

Cleansing Veggie Broth

BOIL:
3 carrots
3 kale leaves
2 celery
2 beets
1 turnip
½ bunch spinach
½ head cabbage
¼ bunch parsley
½ onion
2 garlic cloves

I hope you enjoy these green drinks. Now I feel that I should warn you: when you’re detoxing, you’re going to experience an intensity of negative symptoms, i.e. headaches, moodiness, general aches and pains, etc. This just means that it’s working!

If you plan for it, though, you can ride out this detox storm so you can bask in the calm of the aftermath. Expect to feel uncomfortable as your body releases toxins and take it easy. For instance, don’t schedule to move on your detox or plan a bunch of social engagements.

Instead, focus on the detox. Plan your meals for the week, what you’ll do when you’re not eating (like cleaning and organizing those closets) and other means of helping your body detox (like physical activity, saunas or hot baths, etc.). I guarantee, it’s worth the effort to be healthy.

These sound tasty. And the names of the drinks are great, straight and to the point.

They’re not too bad, Emmanuel. Let me know what you think of them as you try them.

I must admit, though, I favour my smoothies. Maybe because it’s because I’m a fruity kind of gal. ;)

sorry, i mean does anybody know if the majority of the people who have done juice fasting lost 30-40 lbs in 30 days?

Beth January 6, 2011 at 10:40 pm

I lost 9 in a week. Men will tend to lose more than women. It also depends on how much you weigh. If you are 200 lbs, losing 30 in a month will be easier and more appropriate than if you are 145. And it’s important that you incorporate other healthy practices into your detox experience. Avoid sugars and fruits. Use the carrots or green apple juices to make stuff sweet if you need. Dont drink gallons of juice. Do 8oz at a time, two or three a day with some soups, and find a good detox drink mix to have twice a day. Drink detox teas, have regular BMs or colonics/enemas, use saunas and do yoga to keep your body active. Talk walks and do everything you can to avoid stress. I you are stressed, your body will not get the full benefit of the fast. Good luck! I think you can do it. But it’s important that you consider juice fasting as a tranisition into a healthy lifestyle, not just a way to lose some fast weight.

Hi Frank. Thanks for your question.

I personally haven’t come across someone who’s lost 30-40 lbs in 30 days. But it might be possible.

Is it healthy, though? I don’t think so. Most health professionals agree that healthy weight loss happens at 1-2 pounds (or about 0.5 – 1 kilo) per week.

I really believe health should be the ultimate goal of any weight loss program. Most people who follow diets gain the weight right back. Why? Because they only changed their lifestyle for awhile.

From my research and personal experience, it is ONLY through a healthy lifestyle that a healthy weight can be maintained.

is there a green juice mix for dabetes

Reply

Virginia January 2, 2011 at 6:18 pm

If you add chia seeds to any blended drink recipie, it will have very good effects to normalize your blood sugar. Just do a search for chia seeds diabetes. I’m a hypoglycemic, and I eat them every day now. A friend of mine who is a diabetic is very excited about it. It will also make you feel very full for a long time. Tons of nutrients too!

You can make your own with a mix of very low glycemic greens like Spinach, Kale, Collards, mustard greens, beet greens, .Grind and blend these to a puree. To drink, mix 4 oz with equal water, or more water if you like.
Stay away from fruits and sweet vegetables. Take this drink before you eat anything, and your blood sugar levels will stay low and even. My son( non diabetic), has done this for years, and after eating a meal with high carbs, has taken his blood readings and found them low. He has deliberately eaten sugary foods and the results are the same. Try it yourself….take your readings after eating this way. But of course, always eat the healthiest foods, if possible.

@Michael: not from what I can tell, but as a diabetic, you should be concerned mainly with sugar content. These green detox drinks generally don’t have a lot of sugar (except for the added fruit juices, so maybe replace this with water, and the fruit, so maybe cut some of the fruit out and replace with veggies).
PLEASE see your doc before detoxing, though, JUST to make sure it’s safe for you. A major change in diet or exercise affects healthy people. There’s no telling how a pre-existing health condition will influence your reaction.

Hey Bridget! I personally love pulp. There’s nutrition in there so if you like it, I’d say go for it.

do you just drink the whole month or do you alternate between “whole foods” and juice?

Reply

Head Health Nutter (Steph Miller) December 3, 2008 at 8:32 pm

@Jess – when I’m cleansing, I’ll clean up my diet for the month. I’ll end up eating whole foods for a couple of weeks, get down to just raw fruits and veggies, then blend for three days, juice fast for a couple, and then work backwards from there.

When I’m not cleansing, I try to have these detox blended meals a couple of times a week.

Hi Uzma,

Those 5 stubborn kilos will come off with more protein and building your muscles.

And yes, enjoy as many detox meals as you like. They are very nutritious, low in calories and will keep you full so you don’t feel deprived.

Good luck!

The point of a cleanse is not to be nutritious, it is to rid the body of old toxins. You need acidity (lemons/limes), heat (cayenne pepper), macronutrients with relatively low calorie intake (NOT FRUIT, maple syrup is best), and a supplement to restore bacteria into the intestines.

These recipes above are not a REAL clease, rather they refer to EATING CLEAN. There is a difference. Eating clean will help you lose weight (body fat) and keep your metabolism active and is a great way to live. Cleansing is ridding yourself of toxins and will help you lose weight by excreting toxic build up within your body.

Reply

Head Health Nutter (Steph Miller) January 12, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Thanks for your comment, Stan. I totally agree that the Master Cleanse recipe definitely works!

I’ve also found the recipes above work, too (as well as other cleansing systems). It’s like the chicken and the egg conundrum:

Toxins are stored in fat cells, when you lose weight, toxins are released. It also works in reverse, when you rid your body of toxic build up, you lose weight in the process.

I love these green blender recipes because they are low-calorie meals packed full of nutrients that have incredible healing powers! The phyto-nutrients, as well as the fiber, found in fruits & veggies cleanse our systems of cancer-causing free radicals and other internal and external waste our overloaded systems just cannot get around to processing.

Most of the recipes are really tasty, too! :)

Hey Judy! So happy you’re enjoying the green detox juices/meals!

And yes, these are meals super healthy for you (especially the ones with the nuts as the protein makes them a complete meal) – feel free to continue eating/drinking them on a regular basis after your detox. I do!

Symptoms should only last for about 3 days, maybe a bit longer depending on how much your body needs to detox. Your body WILL eventually catch up and you’ll find your bathroom breaks return to normal. (Just make sure to drink lots of water to guard against dehydration.)

However, if your symptoms do not lessen in frequency or severity, please visit your doctor. Everyone’s different and I’ve found that weight-loss sometimes reveals underlying health conditions.

All the great info! If I don’t want to spend the time to blend up these drinks everyday, how long do you think it would last if I make a big batch and store in the refrigerator? I also considered buying one of those Vacu Vin 2.35 L containers which comes with a pump so you can vacuum seal whatever is inside. Maybe that would extend the length of time it stays fresh? Or do you think depriving the fruits/veggies of oxygen would have a bad effect? Thanks!

Reply

Head Health Nutter July 13, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Hey Josh,

Thanks for your excellent question as I’m sure many people would live to save time in preparing these detox drinks.

I store my blended meals in the fridge on occasion but they are the MOST nutritious right after you blend them. I’d recommend storing your batch for no more than a day at the most.

Your idea for the Vacu Vin container is a good idea, though. I don’t think depriving the detox meal of oxygen would do anything but save it from growing bacteria and maybe(?) breaking down.

I wonder if there’s any way to measure the nutrient content of food stored in these types of containers? Anyone know?

Hello! I’m preparing for a major internal body cleansing. My concern is toxins being released without breaking out in a rash. I will not be using a juicer. When juiced my body rejects it and I vomit immediately. What steps and juice recipes do you suggest?

Reply

Head Health Nutter August 31, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Hi Sharron, thanks for visiting Live Lighter and I’m happy to hear you’re about to embark on a cleanse!

(BTW, I always recommend asking the professional advice of a trusted health practitioner before making any drastic changes to your lifestyle, including a cleanse.)

Answers to your questions…

Skin irritations and other detox symptoms may develop when the toxins are released too quickly. Therefore, I’d suggest giving your body a chance to adapt to your cleansing diet by cutting out foods one by one over a longer period of time. (I did this my first time cleansing and barely experienced any adverse side effects.)

Here are a few posts to give you a few ideas in what to cut out, how and when:

1) http://livelighter.org/an-easy-gentle-cleanse-for-a-first-timer/
2) http://livelighter.org/a-safe-enlightening-3-day-fast/
3) http://livelighter.org/how-i-lost-25-lbs-in-3-months/ (skip to step #5)

As for juicing…

Personally I blend all my green detox drinks and several Naturopathic docs have recommended Live Lighter recipes to their patients because of the fiber benefits. There’s a ton of recipes in the Live Lighter “green detox meals” category:

http://livelighter.org/category/cleansing-detoxing/green-detox/

Hopefully your body will accept these blended meals better than it does the green juice! If your body does react negatively, ask your health professional why this might be happening and for alternative cleansing suggestions.

Happy detoxing!

I would like to know, though, are each of these recipes single serving (except for the V8 one)? Also, if I gradually worked my way to a few days of eating/drinking only these, would you recommend a certain number of glasses per day or is it just as-needed?

Hello everyone.

I am a 22 year old college student that is going through some terrible chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms due to an energy drink that I advise NO ONE to take. It is a powder called N.O. Xplode and it has my life in shambles right now. I have been out of energy for the past 6 months to the point where I had to cancel my classes for college because I couldn’t endure the walking that wasn’t a problem for me last year. I have gained a little weight due to my immobility and I remind you that I was weighing 175 lbs and jogging, lifting, stretching weekly! But long story short…I have been from doctor, to cardiologist, to doctor and one MD told me today not to rely on NO supplements for cleansing, detox, energy, etc. He told me to try juicing in which is looking like my best choice of getting rid of whatever toxins that are still in me and getting my energy back.

Basically, I would just like for someone to give me some nice recipes for detox and/or anti-fatigue( or stress). I am gratefully thankful for your help in advance. My email is az3344@wayne.edu Take care everyone and God Bless!!!

Steph (a.k.a. Head Health Nutter) December 6, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Wow, RoDerrick. I’m very sorry to hear about your health troubles and how they’ve affected your life. Thank you for sharing your story and letting us know about N.O. Xplode!

I hope some of the recipes on this blog post suit your taste, and for more, try Live Lighter’s green detox meals category: http://livelighter.org/category/cleansing-detoxing/green-detox/

Most of these recipes are blender meals (health pros say they like these because the plant fiber stays intact which helps cleanse the bowels) but you should be able to juice them, too. Whatever your preference.

Best of luck detoxifying your body of chemicals, and at just the right speed so detox symptoms are manageable for you. Once your body has gone through most of the detoxing it needs, you should find your energy levels not only coming back to normal but hopefully surpassing them. Healthy regards.

RoDerrick Gaston January 2, 2011 at 5:35 am

Thank you so much for the information and your help Steph. I previously acquired the Jack Lalanne power juicer and it’s so good so far. I haven’t really noticed any detox symptoms even though I know that everyone’s body (starts to) detox differently. The main thing is that I don’t have chronic vomiting, serious headaches, or any of that but I just can’t exercise or lift weights like I used to because I get tired extremely fast or immediately. This also leads to my heart speeding up & overworking itself during such activities as washing dishes.

My doctor told me about juicing and give it about a month since the magnesium and sublingual B-12 isn’t really needed since I will be juicing.

I also wanted to let you know how/what/when I juice to see if you could give me any tips.

I juiced vegetables in the morning (early afternoon) such as: 1 tomato, celery (2-3), 4 radishes, 1 cucumber, parsley, & 3-4 carrots. Then fruits in the evening such as : half of a grapefruit, an orange, 2 apples (red & green), red & green grapes, blueberries, pineapple, brown pear, & watermelon when I can.

I just hope whatever I have is cured & slowly lessened but if you have any tips for me then let me know. Have a blessed one!

Happy New Year, Rod! Thank goodness you’re not experiencing too many negative symptoms – that’ll make it a bit easier on you. You sound like you’ve got a good juicing routine, you’ll have to come back and let us know how you’re doing by the end of January.

The only additional tip I have to give you at this time is about the exercise: when I’m cleansing, I take it easy on the activity. I to low intensity activity, like walking or gentle yoga poses just to get the lymphatic system moving but not too much.

RoDerrick Gaston February 9, 2011 at 5:45 am

Hey Steph,

It’s been a while but I wanted to inform you how I’m doing with my juicing. I kind of have a lot to talk about/ask but I’ll try to limit myself in typing a novel, :) . 1st, I’m still juicing and haven’t stopped which is good. I have been on YouTube trying to find other options or variations of what I could try to help.

This one video was of this gentleman who juiced burdock, cilantro, cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, & celery. Whenever I have the funds I juice typical vegetables such as those except for burdock which I try to find in certain whole foods or organic food stores around my area. But lastly during the video he said that burdock is a good blood cleanser so I was in the process of looking for some pretty soon to help rid me of my problems.

Next I wanted to get some info from you about detoxing symptoms. I understand that there is no ONE or certain few types of symptoms for detox as everyone is totally different. But what I could tell you is that I recently visited a site that had examples of people who tried detoxing after prolonged drug use, bad eating habits, etc. But I know that since I’ve been fatigued since last May, I experience getting very fatigued after a meal. I don’t try to eat heavily greasy things or too much since I already have a fast metabolism. But during that fatigue I’m weak, my head feels like I’m sort of light headed, my nose clogs up 90% of the time, & too much movement causes my heart to bonkers as usual. But on that site it had some of those same symptoms that were experienced by certain people so the only thing that I can think of is that whatever organs/areas that supplement I took had to deal with…I’m gonna feel it when I try to detox. So I’m hoping that’s all fair game because it’s just stressful and then again I have no patience :) . Nonetheless I’m doing whatever it takes to get my health back since I’m 22 and feel like I’m 82.

Also, I found out that eating vegetables or juicing vegetables keeps the body “alkaline.” One gentleman said that cancer and/or other harmful diseases/sicknesses thrive off of acidic bodily environments due to the lack of oxygen in and acidic body system. And when there’s a supply of oxygen due to an “alkaline” system cancer just can’t live in that type of environment. I’m thinking to myself I hope it’s true because I had my last check-up at my primary care physician I believe in late November/early December and I told them I wanted them to give me a blood test because the heart palpitations and weakness were frightening. I told my doctor to check for heart disease, atherosclerosis, cortisol levels, check my kidneys, check my adrenal glands, check my thyroid, & anything else that has to deal with my energy and they said that I’m fine. Which was wonderful news but I was still weary as to I wasn’t my old 22 year old college student self still.

Lastly, I want you to hear my typical juicing routine & let me know what you think. For vegetables (when I have them all) I do tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, cilantro, celery, cabbage, & I’m currently looking for burdock root. Then for fruits I juice oranges, apples, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, grapes, grapefruit, and lemon(s).

I really appreciate you for responding previously and take your time getting back to me. Everything is appreciated and I hope all is well Steph.

For those who do use a juicer that removes pulp, use it to your advantage…use it in other foods. Personally, I make a “meatloaf” that is probably as much veggies as meat.
I just posted a recipe using beefalo, our own farm pork and spinach. I have made it though using up to half of my juicing pulp. Also for things like zucchini and banana breads. Don’t waste the valuable fiber and extra nutrients … you can also freeze the pulp in an ice cube tray and drop them into soups, stews, etc.
I will say, we do end up feeding a bit to our chickens and pigs though … just too much volume :-)
Happy New Year’s all!!

Adding to the answer re: a drink for diabetics: You would need to add the chia seed to a drink that has low-sugar fruits (berries) and low-sugar veggies (probably skip the carrots and tomatoes). Also, add extra water, as the chia seed absorbs water and makes the drink thicker after letting it set 5-10 minutes.

Hi Robert, thanks for your excellent question. Although I’m not a licensed health professional and haven’t much experience with diabetes, from what I know of it, as long as your green drinks don’t have a lot of sugar (i.e. fruits in this case), they’re ALL good.

Thanks for the great ideas. The Ginger Root Boost in particular sounds good to me.

Are these substitutes for the three meals of the day ? i am 188lbs and im planning to lose 10-15lbs to get the average weight for my age. (15) is it safe for me? And if i do drink these shakes to substitute for my meals, do i need to continue exercising 3 times a week? Would it have the same or at least is it also effective when i substitute one meal only?

Hey Charisse, thanks for reading Live Lighter and for your questions. It’s really best to get the professional opinion from your health practitioner.

However, in my non-professional opinion (based on my research and detoxing with these blended green meals), I believe it’s absolutely safe for you because they’re just whole foods!

There are many ways you can incorporate these juices/meal substitutes in your health plan. If you want to go slow (which is easiest on your body and you’ll experience less side-effects), then try subbing 1 meal per day with a detox drink and continue your exercise program. If you want to go hard-core, then sub all 3 meals with detox drinks but don’t exercise as hard (i.e. take more walks or do yoga or pilates instead of intense strength training and jogging).

Hope this helps and have fun on your health journey! Steph

Thank you. But if i do sub 1 meal per day, with my excercise program, how much weight do u think i would lose?

Not sure, Charisse. That would involve calculating the calories you consume and subtracting the calories you burn. I suggest you try it out for a week or two and adjust accordingly.

TIP: all my life, when I focused on losing weight, it was difficult for me to achieve; once I started focusing on getting healthy, that’s when the weight dropped off.

Wow! Can’t wait to make one drink like that and pour it down my throat after a hard day’s work in the lumberjack industry! LOL!

Hi. I enjoyed the read. And I had to try the yummy green drink, but I almost never find a recipe I don’t feel needs changed or modified. It’s just the way I am. I did 2.5 oz spinach, 25g kale, 4oz carrot juice, two average size strawberries, a small banana and twelve blueberries. Then when the shake is blended I put 10 drops of mineral concentrate from MHC Life. That works perfect for me. You might try it. Let me know what you think. :)

I forget to add the orange juice. The changed yummy green drink has 2oz of oj as well. So just to make sure you get it ok. I used 2.5oz spinach, 25g kale, 4oz carrot juice, 2oz orange juice (not from concentrate calcium plus vitamin D), two strawberries, a small banana, and 12 blueberries. Then after the shake is blended I add 10 drops mineral concentrate from Making Healthy Choices. That drink is perfect and I hope you try it. :)

Hey Steph,
I’ve never heard of detox juicing until I now. I just did a search for Health drinks and this was one of the options. I’m looking forward to trying these drinks although I cannot detox right because I’m pregnant. This is my 4th pregnancy and I would really like to eat healthier. During my pregnancys my weight fluctutated from 155lbs to 205lbs, 160lbs to 207lbs, 170 to 210lbs. This time I would really like to not gain so much that I cannot get back to my starting weight, at least. If you can help me I would grately appreciate it. Thank You and God Bless!
Camille

Hi Camille, thanks for popping on by and checking out these detox drink recipes. Congrats on the 4th pregnancy! Thanks for asking for my suggestions regarding weight gain during your pregnancy.

Just to be clear, I’m not a health professional so I’d definitely check with your pediatrician when changing your diet. The safest way for you to keep your weight down is to focus mainly on eating whole foods, like fruits, veggies, lean meats, legumes, nuts and seeds. Stay away from processed and fast food.

Also, make sure you get lots of low-key activity in, like walking. I’ve heard that when you’re pregnant, tho, you’re supposed to keep doing the level of activity you were doing before your pregnancy so you don’t shock your system or the baby.

Hope this helps and good luck! Steph
