Cell Phone Radiation: Are You In The Know?

written by Guest Blogger December 27, 2011

Did you get a new cell phone for Christmas? If you did or you use a cell phone as a landline like I do, this guest post by Lloyd Burrell is a must read! Not only does he give us the latest news about mobile phone radiation, he includes tips of how we can protect our health.

Aren’t cell phones great? Just about everyone you see on the street or in a car has a cell phone glued to their ear or one of those Bluetooth devices hanging off it.

They are just so handy. You are out shopping and you forgot what sort of pasta sauce your nearest and dearest asked you to pick up. You get caught in traffic on the way home from work, a quick call to your partner, and they know where you are. Cell phones really have improved our lives in so many ways.

Cell Phones – The Downside

But what about the downside? Is there one? There is so much conflicting info on the WWW and elsewhere regarding the dangers of cell phone radiation, that you are probably wondering if there really is a downside. Actually there is.

Cell phones emit and receive electromagnetic fields (EMFs) similar to little microwave radios going two-ways. If you don’t believe me you can see for yourself. Hold a Cornet radiation meter next to your cell phone when it’s in use, you can see what it’s emitting. Studies show that EMFs of the type that cell phones use can cause DNA structure mutations, which translates into an increased risk of brain tumors and cancer (from clamping cellphones to our ears). EM radiation is also being linked to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and even diabetes.

In May of this year the World Health Organization (WHO), put out a report stating that they are a Class2B carcinogen. In 2007 an independent panel of scientists, published the Bioinitiative report which reviewed over 2000 studies highlighting the adverse effects and in San Francisco they are putting stickers on cell phone packaging to warn about the adverse health effects.

So what can you do? We have become reliant on cellphones, just like computers, they are now part of our lives.

It’s about being aware and making a few compromises. Not giving up cell phones, but changing your behavior to take account of the dangers.

7 Tips To Safeguard Your Health

Here are seven quick tips that will help to safeguard your health immediately:

  1. Reduce your cellphone time. It might not be what you want to hear but less exposure means less risk.
  2. Use your speakerphone as much as possible. This has the advantage of keeping the EMF emissions farther away from your head.
  3. Learn to switch your cell off. Do you really need to be contactable 24/7? Switching off from time to time can be empowering.
  4. Use texting rather than voice to communicate. You can text with the phone away from your head so this is much safer.
  5. Keep your cell phone out of the bedroom. Studies show that EMF damage is far worse at night, so to be safe better leave it out of your sleeping area.
  6. Make a habit of using your landline (a corded one preferably) as much as possible. It might cost a bit more but believe me it’s worth it for your health.
  7. Establish a cell phone basket in your home. Like the umbrella stands in the old days, it’s a place where you put your cell phone when you are at home. You can leave it on if you need to, that way you avoid having it switched on on your person all the time.

Follow these tips and you’ll reduce your exposure to cell phone radiation a whole lot. Phone radiation is just a part of the big picture because electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are all around us. But already if you do the above you will, I think, you will be able to live just a little bit lighter……

Lloyd Burrell developed a sensitivity to EMFs in 2002. He now likes to blog to raise awareness on the dangers of cell phones, cordless phones, WiFi, Bluetooth dirty electricity EMFs, and more. You can follow him on Twitter here.

I love Lloyd’s tip #7, and found the perfect solution at Chapters Indigo, it’s a pair of open hands in classy black, and it can also double as a book holder for either reading or holding a cookbook while cooking!! Do you have any cell phone tips in reducing your exposure to EMFs?

Thanks for this valuable post/warning about the real risks & dangers of cell telephony Stephanie!

The idea of Living Lighter AND Longer is much more appealing than developing a cancerous brain tumor or even “ringing in the ears” which I’ve got. So I’m taking those 7 tips for reducing EMF radiation seriously! In fact, I will be observing any & all changes in order to track any differences (hopefully improvements) to my current condition. Since I’m already scheduled for an MRI in Jan 2012 to rule out a tumour, I appreciate the timing of this post even more & now use a remote headset (not bluetooth) for my cellphone, and a VOIP headset for calls from home via skype (also savng the costs of a landline & long distance). I will definitely adopt the 7th great tip for both my keys & my phone, which I am always misplacing!

I hope you and others will also pledge to “never text while driving” to prevent an even greater risk ~~~ death by accident!! 🙁

OOO, Dee, so sorry to hear about the ringing in your ears. I hope these tips do help and that the MRI comes out clean. Have you consulted Louise Hay’s “You Can Heal Your Life” to see what she suggests is the underlying issues around this condition?

Thanks for the great suggestion Steph… which I will check out, as I have that book but had forgotten all about it. So far, the audiologist and ENT specialist have both said that “nobody knows” the actual cause of “tinnitus” but both think it is exascerbated by stress. They also told me that there is NO specific treatment other than surgery ~ and only for a tumour which is “operable”. After having this for a whole year now, I don’t accept that, and so I will have to do more research of my own, and let you know what I discover….

Actually Stella, tinnitus is often cited as one of the symptoms of electrical sensitivity see http://electricsense.com/1084/cell-phones-if-you-don%E2%80%99t-get-cancer-you-could-get-tinnitus/. EMFs upset us in all sorts of different ways, I’m not saying this is the cause of your auditory problems but it could well be. You might want to take your EMF mitigation a step further, there are some useful tips in this post http://livelighter.org/how-to-live-better-in-our-emf-polluted-world/ which I wrote a few months ago. You might also want to download the free report on “EMF Protection” from my website.

WOW and WOW. Many thanks for these cell phone tips Steph! Will follow tips immediately!

What about cordless home phones? Are they generating radiation too?

Stella January 6, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Thank you to both of you ~ Steph and Lloyd (Burrell) for your valuable suggestions!

I have visited the website http://www.ElectricSense.com to read thru a lot of the information, watch the videos, and bookmarkrf it for future reference & to order the GS filters to prevent future damage. I am most grateful to know that there are solutions for tinnitus (prevention of chronic fatigue, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, brain tumors etc)

Like both of you, I feel it’s important to become our own best advocate by taking responsibility for what we do, and then taking action to protect our most valuable possession ~ our health.

Lloyd Burrell January 7, 2012 at 7:51 am

Yes they are. Studies show that cordless (DECT) phones emit radiation just the same as cell phones.

Head Health Nutter January 13, 2012 at 5:30 pm

Thank you for your informed response to Emmanuel’s question, Lloyd! 🙂

Stella January 8, 2012 at 2:12 pm

I have bookmarked your Electric Sense web site & tweeted that link about EMF pollution /dangers and will be protecting myself with GS filters for every electrical outlet in my home now.
I bought a new digital screen with large antenna kept inside my bedroom window for 2 mths until I realized my tinnitus was getting worse ~ with blurry vision, itchy forehead, extreme dry mouth & greater fatigue. The antenna is outside now, so I hope I haven’t caused irreversible damage,

Thank you Lloyd for your valuable research & free newsletter. I think we have to be our own best health advocates,

Thanks for good article! For those who is searching the solution how to shield house and self from emf radiation I can share the shop where you can buy all the materials for emf shielding and also emf protective clothing: http://emf-shielding.com
I shield my house from a mast and if I need to call from a mobile, I do calls only using Moblok cover which reflects direct radiation from your head. It can be found in the same shop.
