For most people, melatonin levels rise gradually throughout the evening and peak late at night. In the early morning, these levels can diminish and make it harder to fall asleep for some people.
Melatonin supplements boost your melatonin output temporarily, making you feel drowsier and easing the process of falling asleep. For the most part, melatonin is an effective treatment for insomnia, albeit not one without its own side effects.
Side effects of melatonin include grogginess upon waking – a major issue for people that take the drug to combat tiredness caused by poor sleep – minor blood pressure changes, and lower body temperature.
For the most part, melatonin is a harmless sleep supplement that can really work for most people. However, it should only be used as intended – as a supplement – and is not an every-night solution.
Valerian Root: An All-Natural Sedative
A mild natural sedative, Valerian root has long been the choice of insomniacs in need of a quick cure for sleepless nights. Valerian root has a calming effect that lowers the body’s natural anxiety response.
Unlike most other sedatives, Valerian root doesn’t produce any drowsiness the next morning, nor does it leave patients with a hangover. However, its mild effects make it unsuitable for anything more than mild insomnia or low quality sleep.
Better Options: Tea, Exercise, and Vitamins
You don’t need to take health supplements to cure a sleep disorder. Many people struggle to fall asleep because of a combination of poor diet and limited exercise, and not a lack of natural sleep hormones.
Instead of relying on sleep supplements to fall asleep, try drinking a small glass of chamomile tea before bed every night. Eating a vitamin-heavy diet (vitamins B and D especially) is also known to help with regulating your sleep patterns.
Finally, try to exercise at least three or four times per week. Exercise is proven to help increase sleep quality, as well as reducing the chance of sleep disorders like insomnia developing.
