In Letting Go of Stress with Meditation we focused on the stress-management benefits of meditation. What we didn’t talk about was how meditation also helps strengthen our emotional fortitude AND brain power. Here’s guest blogger, Barbara Jolie, with other natural methods to strengthen our brains.
When it comes to our health, most of us try to do the best we can to give our bodies what they need to stay strong, healthy and happy. Especially when you’re trying to lose weight, taking extra care of your health inside and out is one of the essential ingredients for success.
But, one body part that is sometimes overlooked is actually one of the most important keys to total body wellness: the brain. Whether you are a student, a young professional, a stay-home mom or a retiree, it’s always a good time to focus on improving your brain function. It really does have the power to improve your entire life.
Because the brain is the center of our bodies’ universe, it’s important to make moves to keep it working in tip-top condition. In fact, doing so can be fun and easy. Here are a few steps for starting out:
1. Have a delicious breakfast every day.
Breakfast has long been known as the most important meal of the day. How many of us, though, really focus on making it our best meal of the day? Not only should your breakfast be nutritional, it should also be enough to give you energy for the early part of the day and jump-start your metabolism.
Instead of grabbing a piece of fruit and a yogurt, or going for your usual milk and cereal routine, try to change up your breakfasts to make them fabulous. What you need most during breakfast is good, healthy complex carbs.
Try some steel-cut oats with fruit and walnuts and some egg whites. Or go for an egg white, cheese-free omelet packed with veggies. Pair it will two slices of hearty multi-grain toast. The more you make your breakfast nutritional, the better it will taste, and the more you will look forward to this important meal.
2. Use herbs to your advantage.
While many of us take a multi-vitamin or common herbs like Echinacea and Ginseng on the regular, there is no reason not to do a little research into the best herbs for the results you really need. If you really want to aid brain function, take advantage of some of the Earth’s natural herbs, and take them on a daily or every-other-day basis.
Some of the best herbs for brain function are Brahmi, Tagara, Gotu kola and Ashwaghandha. All four herbs are known for rejuvenation of the brain and nervous system, reduction of stress, improvement of blood circulation in the brain and memory improvement.
3. Sleep longer.
This is one of the biggest no-brainers. It is also, unfortunately, one of the biggest things overlooked by adults trying to lead healthier lifestyles. It is not enough to say, “I should go to bed earlier,” or to excuse yourself by saying, “I just don’t have enough hours in the day to get sleep.” The brain needs at least 7 hours of sleep to regenerate and repair. Find some way to get your needed hours. If it means going to bed earlier, then that’s no sacrifice if you get to feel better, happier and more engaged every day.
4. Invigorate with essential oils.
Essential oils are commonly used to relax, to induce different moods and as part of skin care routines. Essential oils also hold huge benefits to brain health. Rosemary, basil and peppermint are known to act as brain stimulants, improve mind clarity and prevent fatigue. It’s a good idea to buy all three in their purest forms. They can be used for cooking, to mix with bath water, to dab on pressure points, or to infuse with teas and drinks.
