3 Ways I Finally Won the Weight Loss Battle

I love success stories! Here`s one from guest blogger, Sara, who shares what worked for her in attaining her weight loss goals. 

I was never seriously overweight, but over the years, I had gradually packed on more pounds than I was comfortable with. It made me feel self-conscious, and I just plain didn’t feel good about myself. But, like many people in my position, my weight loss efforts were frequently stalled. There were just so many bad habits working against me, namely sheer laziness. But, after awhile I finally managed to get things right.

Here are just a few ways I managed to do so, and I hope you will give these techniques a try as well.

Got My Mind Right

In order to make the decisions that will move us towards our weight loss goals, we must be in a good mental space. It all starts here. If things are all screwed up, our decisions will be as well. We will keep doing things we know we shouldn’t do, and get all mad at ourselves. Then we will give up. I knew I had to get my mind right to get my weight right.

First, and foremost, I made stress management a top priority. High stress levels and trying to lose weight don’t really go hand-in-hand. When we feel stressed, we make poor decisions about our health; we feel more pessimistic and just don’t care as much about turning things around.

Stress triggers emotional eating, which can be a major barrier to losing weight; it also makes us more likely to skip our exercise sessions in favor of sedentary activities that just allow us to completely zone out and not think about anything, like surfing the web or watching TV for hours on end. Once I got my stress under control, I was in a much better place mentally; I was feeling good, and that motivated me to make decisions that would keep me feeling that way.

I also learned to be forgiving of my screw-ups and remember I was looking to make long-term changes here. If I messed up one day, that didn’t mean I was doomed to fail forever. It also helped me develop a healthier relationship with food, and I knew I could still indulge on occasion as long as the majority of the time I was eating really well. If I skipped exercise a couple of days in a row, I didn’t berate myself and just give up; I just started up again, and did my best to stick to my planned routine.

Got A Bunch of ‘’Stuff’’ to Motivate Me

If you are looking to get in shape and lose weight, there is no shortage of items to help you along. While it is not necessary to buy every new fad item, there are more than a few that can be really helpful. Additionally, a bonus side effect of these purchases send a message that you are serious about your weight loss efforts. A good way to screen products for actual usability is to always go for items that are designed for athletes, Anything from ugly eyeglass straps to sleek compression socks… if an athlete uses it, it is probably designed with function in mind.

There are also plenty of “things” that can be purchased to promote healthy eating/living that actually save money in the long run. One of my first purchases was a blender to cut costs of expensive juice vendors. On top of saving money, it was fun. Another bright idea I had was to buy Yoga DVD’s vs a membership to a studio (some ideas are never used though and actually do waste money).

Figured Out My ‘’Why’’

If you have any sort of goal you wish to achieve which requires you to break some very bad habits and make significant changes to our lifestyle, you absolutely must define your ‘’why.’’ Everything we want, we want for a reason. We believe attaining this thing will offer us many benefits. Unless you clearly define your weight loss ‘’why,’’ you will continue to falter. It is not enough to say you want to lose weight. To be healthier? Because you want to be a better parent to your children? Why?

You see where I’m going here. You have to keep questioning until you cannot go any deeper. Once you hit on those core reasons, you will know you must achieve your goal no matter what it takes because you know how much benefit you will receive from doing so. Having a rock-solid ‘’why’’ will get you through the slumps; it will motivate you when you are feeling less than motivated; it will make it easier to make the choices you need to make to get where you want to be.

Hi Sara,

Thanks for a great blog post, and congratulations on finally winning the battle. It is a fantastic feeling when you finally know that you have control over your weight, and no longer gets those nasty surprises when you get on the scale 🙂

I just wanted to add one more thing to your list, that has been very important in my own fight against the extra pounds. And that is all the thoughts in your head. All the very, very bad excuses you have for skipping the gym and indulging in chocolate, like “It’s been a rough day, I deserve it” or “I’ll just have one piece”, even though you know you will eat everything in sight. These voices lure you into accepting short term gratification which directly contradicts the long term goal of weight loss. As long as you thinks of these voices as representing you, you will continuously be lured into cheating on the diet with some form of excuse from the voices.
